BrightMinds: a paid exam-prep app with a study tutor that costs under $1 per student

We built BrightMinds a subscription learning platform for Classes 7–10 and NDA aspirants, with an AI tutor inside every lesson and hard spending limits that keep AI costs predictable.

The challenge

BrightMinds wanted to turn its study material into a product students would pay for. That meant three things.

A paid app that just works. Students subscribe to their class through the App Store or Google Play and get instant access, with no manual unlocking by staff.

Help when students get stuck. Studying from a PDF alone is lonely. Students need someone to explain a page, highlight what matters for the exam, and test them.

AI without a runaway bill. An AI tutor only works for a small education business if its cost is known in advance and can't spike.

What we built

The student app

  • 414 topics across Classes 7, 8, 9, 10 and NDA, with 41 free topics to try before subscribing
  • Subscriptions per class. A student can hold more than one, for example Class 10 and NDA.
  • A built-in PDF reader for the study material
  • Notifications for new content and upcoming renewals, sent only for the classes each student has paid for
  • Daily current affairs for NDA general-knowledge preparation, curated with AI twice a day from national news

AI Help: a study tutor on every page

Students tap AI Help while reading any page and choose a mode:

Explain this page
The lesson in simple language, at their class level
Exam focus
What to remember for their exam
Quiz me
Questions to test themselves on that page
Ask AI
Any question about the page

Answers are based on the page the student is reading, so they stay on the syllabus. Non-subscribers get one free AI answer: a taste of the paid product at the moment they need help.

The admin console

  • Upload PDFs and publish new topics
  • Manage free and paid content per class
  • See users, active subscriptions by class, and system health
  • Send notifications to students
Under the hood

The engineering that protects the business

Cost ceiling

AI costs have a hard limit

A shared answer cache, a daily limit per student, and a platform-wide daily cap that alerts a human. Worst case is about $0.003 per answer.

Server-side paywall

Paid access is enforced on the server

Nobody can bypass the paywall by tampering with the app, and no AI keys are stored inside it.

Fresh answers

Answers never go stale

When the team replaces a PDF, the AI explanations for that page regenerate automatically.

Subscriptions

Paying students never get locked out

Late or out-of-order App Store and Google Play events can never shorten a student's access.

Measured

Every AI request is logged

Usage and cost are recorded per request and match the cloud bill, so the client always knows what AI costs.
